A S Shafiuddin Ahmed
Doctoral Student - McManamay Lab

I was born in Bangladesh, where I completed both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Fisheries and Aquaculture, respectively at Noakhali Science and Technology University. Following this, I worked as a research assistant at City University of Hong Kong. My primary research interests cover biomonitoring and environmental toxicology.
I have previous experience in identifying heavy metals, microplastics, and zoonotic pathogens from water and fish. Moreover, I have organized field sampling designs, conducted advanced statistical analyses, and written manuscripts, which have been published in various reputable and international journals.
Currently, I am pursuing my PhD at the McManamay Lab and collaborating with the USDA to assess water quality through biomonitoring of aquatic organisms, particularly macroinvertebrates at the family level, using advanced technologies such as optical imaging (AI) and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. This approach, utilizing high-throughput image classification, holds the potential to significantly reduce the time, cost, and labor associated with traditional identification methods. However, challenges remain in sampling, building training libraries, and refining AI imaging processes, which can be tedious.
Finally, I am eager to engage in international collaborations, particularly in environmental research, to expand and enrich these efforts. If you want to know more about me, feel free to contact me.
