ENV Graduate Program Core Curriculum
General Doctor of Philosophy Degree Requirements
The minimum semester-hour requirement for the Ph.D. degree is seventy-two (72) semester hours.
Note: It is not necessary that students with the B.S. degree obtain an M.S. degree in environmental science before pursuing the doctorate.

- Coursework for Doctor of Philosophy - 24 total
- Students will take a class from 4 of the 5 core competency areas outlined below (as prescribed by their PI/committee). This gives some flexibility to the committee to focus on the student’s research area.
Core Competency Areas:
- Statistical Science/Data Analysis/Data Interpretation/Modeling (STA 5300, ENV 5430 - Advanced Mathematical Modeling of Environmental Quality Systems, ENV 5440 – Advanced Statistics for Environmental Scientist)
- Toxicology (ENV 4344 (Human), ENV 5370 Eco-Toxicology (Ecological))
- Risk Assessment (ENV 5325 (Human), Eco Risk Assessment (ENV 5342 (Ecological))
- Ecological and Environmental Systems (BIO 5300 (Ecosystem Biogeochemistry or Limnology, ENV 5300 Global Change Biology, ENV 4386 (5386) Remote Sensing, ENV 4322 (5322) Climate Anthropology, ENV 4345 (5345) Water Management
- Environmental Chemistry (ENV 5387)
- Three seminar courses (5102 or 5103) - 3 hrs
- Research hours (6V98) - 6 hrs
- Dissertation (6V99) - 12 hrs
- Research, laboratory techniques, or classroom offerings - 39hrs
- After completing the candidacy exam, students may register for dissertation (6V99) at their advisor's discretion.
