Kayla Garrett, Ph.D.
Post-Doc Teaching Fellow
I am a recent graduate from the McManamay Lab in Environmental Science. I completed my Bachelors in General Engineering here at Baylor, with a concentration in Humanitarian Engineering. My focus has primarily been on Renewable Energy Transitions at various scales. My work has sought to assess opportunities to overcome of social, economic, and environmental issues in pursuing just energy transitions. In 2017, I helped to found a nonprofit called Justice And Mercy Energy Services (or JustEnergy) whose mission is to alleviate energy poverty and promote job creation in regions of northern Haiti. We do so by providing solar energy system design, installation, and maintenance to a variety of civil works groups (such as orphanages, schools, clinics, and hospitals). We aim to source supplies as locally as possible, and employ Haitian technicians to ensure the relational based empowerment model is honoring the skills and knowledge of the local community.
Currently I am a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow hosted in the Environmental Science Department. I teach Exploring Environmental Issues, The Environment and Energy, and The Environment and Sustainability. I am always available to chat about solar energy (in both domestic and international applications), hydropower, energy culture, and environmental stewardship.
